MISSING PERSONS REPORTED IN THE UNITED STATES ANNUALLY
600,000
Each year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the United States, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), including hikers, children, seniors, and vulnerable individuals who become lost or disoriented. In San Mateo County, our diverse terrain — from rugged coastal cliffs and redwood forests to dense urban areas — can quickly turn a simple walk, drive, or outdoor adventure into a life-threatening situation.
When someone goes missing, every minute counts.
The San Mateo County Search and Rescue team is a 100% volunteer unit within the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, dedicated to finding missing persons and supporting emergency operations throughout our community.
With over 60 trained members contributing more than 16,000 hours of service each year, our team responds to a wide array of incidents — from wilderness searches and coastal storms to local events like the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival.
We are your neighbors, friends, and coworkers united by a shared commitment to serve, whether that means rescuing lost hikers, assisting during wildfires, or ensuring safety during severe weather.
